Spring 2025

MAR–APR 2025

News from CIWEC Hospital — seasonal health advice from our doctors and what's new at our Kathmandu and Pokhara hospitals.

Welcome to the Nepali New Year 2082. Spring brings green trees, flowers and warm weather — and a few seasonal health reminders. Here's our health news in brief, and what we've been up to over the past few months.

Health news

Air quality. Nepal's air quality deteriorated from late March into April 2025, with the air quality index (AQI) rising above 200 because of forest fires across the country and a lack of rain. Pre-monsoon showers have improved things a little. An AQI below 50 is considered healthy; high levels can worsen heart and lung problems. An air filter at home or in the office keeps indoor air in the healthy range — several brands are available in Kathmandu. Avoid outdoor exercise when pollution is very high.

Trekking. It's trekking and climbing season — one of the most rewarding parts of living in Nepal. Always trek with an experienced guide. Spring also brings a higher risk of diarrhea and gastrointestinal infection, so be careful with drinking water and avoid raw vegetables if your stomach is sensitive. Mineral water in 1-liter bottles is generally safe. See Trekking in Nepal.

Altitude illness. Go slowly, at your own pace, and heed the early warning signs of acute mountain sickness: headache, nausea, fatigue and dizziness. If you have symptoms, stay at the same altitude until you feel better, and descend if they get worse. See Altitude illness advice.

Health screening. Annual check-ups help catch problems early, before they become serious, and are a chance to talk about lifestyle, update vaccinations and manage chronic conditions. To book, call reception or email [email protected].

Out in the community

Health partner at the NICE expo. The Nepal India China Expo (NICE) — the first tri-nation tourism expo of its kind — brought together public and private tourism and hospitality organizations from all three countries in Pokhara in February 2025, with conferences, networking, panel discussions and cultural performances. CIWEC took part as the official health partner.

School nurses' conference. The British School hosted its 3rd annual School Nurses Conference on 15 February 2025 with the School Nurses Network – Nepal, with CIWEC as a key sponsor. Our pediatrician, Dr. Sangita Puree, presented on strategies for promoting mental health and well-being in inclusive settings. The event helped school nurses put guidelines into practice confidently in their schools.

First aid training. Our medical team ran first aid training for several groups at both our Kathmandu and Pokhara hospitals: hands-on first aid and basic CPR practice on manikins, plus practical tips on what to do in an emergency until medical help arrives.
