Dental Information for travellers

Broken Teeth/Filling

A number of people have experienced broken teeth or broken fillings from stones in the rice.  To help prevent this chew slowly and be aware that the stones tend to settle at the bottom of the cooking pot.

Altitude

High altitude itself will not cause any problems with your teeth but it can aggravate any underlying problems.  A filling with a void in it has an air pocket that can become painful at higher altitudes.  A tooth that has an abscess or is beginning to abscess will also become more acute with the change in air pressure.  Sinus infections will also become more noticeable or painful.  A dentist should be consulted as soon as possible for any acute, severe toothache/welling.  Amoxicillin 500mg three times a day for a week is the standard antibiotic treatment.

Gum Problems

ANUG is a reversible gum condition that is sometimes seen with traveling and is related to stress.  The gums become bright red and very painful.  Antibacterial rinse, Vitamin C and overall stress reduction will heal the tissue.  Consult with a dentist when possible.

Tooth Brushing

You should always brush with a soft bristled toothbrush.  In Nepal medium and hard bristle brushes are available and should be avoided.  Some of the locally made toothpastes can also be too abrasive.
